Fear

[:1]I've played through D2 too many times to count, but i've never even once felt any fear.

This isn't a problem with D1. Even now I always get anxious and jumpy when playing it, especially when fighting the butcher.

I'd like to see the same atmospheric effect in D3 that was in D1.

Maybe it's just me who thinks this, but i'd really like it.

Edit: See the Horror article in the wiki for Blizzard quotes and hands-on reports on this issue.

I'll tell you why.

Firstly in D1 you are stuck in a creepy little town called Tristram, and made to explore dungeons downwards all the way to Hell. If there isn't scary then I don't know what is.

In D2, you explore the vast continents of the Santuary. So obviously you get to see different environments and not just a gloomy little town. It was meant to make players have an epic feel.

Secondly in D1 your character can only walk, so being chased by something that can walk twice as fast isn't feasible.

In D2 your character can run.

Lastly, there are more colors and variations in D2.

From what I have seen, D3 is both D1 and D2. So far the dungeons are dark and creepy, and the lands are epic. And this is only the first two acts.|||I loved acts 1, 2, and 3 in D2. my favorite parts of the game are act 1 cath and down and the tombs of act 2. imo the D2 “hell” was terrible. It did not feel like a hell to me. It was very plain imo and I think they took a big step back from the D1 version of it (and that was not even that good). I hope that in D3 the hell environment is much better this would go along way imo to giving people back that sense of fear|||Quote:

I kinda agree with you. Act 4 wasn't scary, it was... disgusting and gory.

I think Blizzard tried to add some fear factor by in the first 3 maps (Outer Steppes/Plains of Despair/City of the Damned) but it just wasn't dark enough. In fact it was a little too bright Same applies to Chaos Santuary.

I think River of Flame was meant to be a improved version of D1 Hell but I would've prefered a River of Blood

As for D3, I think Act 1's dungeon, which is under Caldeum, seems like big improvement of the Catatombs. Heck, even Torchlight copied the map layout and style. The wilderness you get to explore later is an eye-opener, the Siege Beast is awesome and then finally King Leoric's tomb... niceeee.

Now Act 2, the desert terrain looks and feels more like a desert. The monsters are also really refreshing, they have abilities such as digging into the sand, and camouflaging into the environment. And it's only Act 2... The tombs are also much MUCH darker as compared to D2's.

I really can't wait to see the rest of the acts. Blizzard will probably show Act 3 in the next Blizzcon, along with the last class, but they are definitely gonna go hush-hush about the last Act(s).|||The first time I ever played diablo 2, back in 2001, I was scared. I made it to the jail and then I died to a tainted boss pack. I was so scared that I would die again trying to get my corpse and lose all of my white and blue gear or that I would have to exit the game and lose all of my gear. I soon learned that neither of those things would make me lose my gear and that it is actually pretty hard to lose your gear. I also learned that white and blue gear isn't worth a bull cookie.

I also found the environment of the jail scary, although nothing compared to D1, but I was also very impressionable with my age barely into the double digits. |||I think people worrie to much , why do we keep thinking they will deliver anything less then what D2 was or even D1 ?

They have much more tools now to get the impression they want , so im posetive they will deliver in every department.|||Quote:

Istantly make diablo 3 scarier by adding the creatures known as The hidden

Ya know......

I see What you see not,

Vision milky than eyes rot,

When you turn they will be gone,

Whispering there hidden song,

Than you see what cannot be,

Shadows move where light should be,

Out of darkness out of mind,

Cast down to the Halls Of The Blind

creepy *** monsters that sneak up on you...

Maybe creatures that blend in with the surroundings?

Like statues that suddenly whack you.|||I'd like to see more monsters that are invisible. Or that teleport to you. Beeing jumped by a teleport monster is quite a rush in D2. (It happens more in mods like Median XL, or others, but lets not get into that)

I liked the wraiths in act 2, Tal Rasha's tombs. They weren't exactly invisible, but mostly transparent, and you could miss them on the background. Pushing that to the extreme would be nice. In the same manner, some of the worst enemies in D2 are the Souls in WKS, and other places. You remember, those lightning things, that disappear, and shoot deadly lightning to you, insta-kill ! Those types of monsters, I want to see again.

Hell, some people even re-roll the maps by changing games when they meet these Souls ! I want them to be constant in the dark places of the world, scary, invisible death. Yup, just like Zombazinator said.

For how they are made invisible, blending in the environment could be nice, simply invisible too, or coming out of shadows, simply hiding in dark corners. That can make the trick too !

Also really small and fast monsters that deal massive damage give people fear. (Dolls in Durance of Hate level 2 ?)|||Quote:

As seen in the demo, the salamander man thingy blends into the background, and the weapon wielding lizard thingy burrows into the sand.
