About auto-stats

So there are four different stats in D3, and if gaining stat points will be what it is in D2, we would gain five stat points every level, and a little HP and Mana. We can assume that with the auto-stat distribution, each attribute will gain at least one stat point, right?. Wouldn't it be a good idea if Blizzard let us choose where the last stat point goes? Like when we create the character, we choose then and there how our stats will distribute for the rest of the game? It allows for a little bit of customization, right? Like battle-mages can go for a 2:1:1:1 build compared to a glass cannon mages 1:1:1:2 build.

It's been done before in mmo's

Idk I thought it was a good idea |||I doubt the auto-stat system is going to be that lame, as in just adding one point into every stat and a second to a random one.

I'm thinking that depending on what char you are playing, that their is a certain chance that a point will go in a particular stat. Barby's would have a high chance of strength and vita, while wizards will have a high chance of willpower.|||i know people are going to hate me for saying this, but i anticipate a system similar to that of world of warcraft. for those who havnt played WoW, if you were to look at your char's base stats without any additions from items, the highest stat is generally was the char is built around (warriors = strenght, mage/warlock = energy, rogue = agil. etc. etc.) blizz has also stated that 99% of the stat customization open to you has been moved to the items that you actively choose to put on your char. My thoughts are that we are going to see a huge variety of items and mods for those items, much more so than in Diablo II or any item based RPG.|||It was often complained in diablo 2 that Charms broke the game because you could have so many if you didn't worry about loot. One person suggested that every character get their own special inventory for charms with limited real-estate. I think that Blizzard will do that, and "items you pick up" is clever code for "charms".|||Quote:

From the DiabloWiki,

1 point of Strength gives:

+x% Melee and Ranged Physical Damage Bonus

x% Armor Bonus

+x% Block Amount

[edit]Dexterity

Dexterity governs your chance to critically strike a target, and so doing more damage. Dexterity influences your chance to dodge an attack and lowers the chance that your character will be interrupted by getting hit.

1 point of Dexterity gives

+x% Critical Strike Chance

+x% Dodge Chance

Higher Dexterity lowers chance you will be interrupted by getting hit.

[edit]Vitality

Vitality governs the amount of life your character has and how fast its mana regenerates.

1 point of Vitality gives

+x Life

Mana Regeneration of +x per second

[edit]Willpower

Willpower governs the amount of spell damage bonus and extra health the consumption that a health globe will grant your character.

1 point of Willpower gives

+x% Spell Damage Bonus

+x% Health Globe Bonus

so every attribute gives every character type some kinda bonus. like for a wizard, a point into str will give the +armor bonus & block amount, or a point into willpower will give a health globe bonus to barbs.

Im thinking, if they keep the fixed-sp-per-level, each character will gain at least one point into each stat (to keep all the characters balanced and to promote a variety of builds) with the last point (assuming that we get 5 sp per level) going into whatever makes sense (barb:str, wiz:Wp, etc.)

I thought it would be nice if we could pick where that last point goes, to do some craaaaaazy builds? Like a meleewiz or critbarb or something-or-other|||Quote:

I think i read somewhere that D3 is getting rid of the charms system :o|||It would be nice to be able to do some customization of attributes. What if I want a melee wizard or a stomping barbarian? I'm sure the "standard" stat distribution they give us would be subpar for such builds.|||Im not to keen on this auto stat allocation thingy really and I hope we get a chance to have SOME control over where our stats go . I hope they give us X amount that we get to assign where we want to . Maybe there will be some quests that give bonus stats for us to assign like in D2 . I hope they dont make it so that every character type has the same stats and the only way we control it is by the items we equip ..

completely agree with you there. Bashiok make some really good arguements for auto-stats, and i get that with auto-stats they can get rid of stat requirements for everyone. Im getting a little more comfortable with the idea, but itd still be really nice to have at least some control over our stats.

I was thinking, Blizz should half the effects of each stat point and double the stat points, and each stat would gain at least one per level, and an extra stat point into whatever the character should be based around (ie. str:barb, wp:wiz, etc.) leaving us with 5 stat points to mess around with. We could make some really fun extreme builds still right? Tankbarbs and Meleewizards and Critbarbs and whatever else.

Again, idk, i thought it was a good idea |||Quote:

The thing is, Jay Wilson said that we should be able to customize with items, and I think he'll follow through. It may be difficult to comprehend, as Diablo has never given us gear that's quite that influential (Although it always has been more influential than stats, which is why I can swallow this easily), but I really do believe we will have so much freaking gear that we will STILL be able to customize stats, only with gear instead of stat points.
