Mercenaries ... a new perspective (+visual presentation) - Page 2

I'd like to see NPCs rather, then any small group of mercs. Fighting along side a personality would be way more engaging then a minion. It would be a nice change for them to challenge you, then for you to charge in with your henchmen. Imagine if the tables turned and your character was one of those three rookies. I think that would be more interesting. It would give the player a sense of inspiration, and especially when they are starting off, might humble them a bit.|||Quote:

Like I said, making the player choose between Power and Storage Space will just cause issues. That's what happened with Charms in D2. You sacrificed your gameplay experience for a power boost.

Why do you insist that rookies are only extra storage ... there are already many situations where they are more useful than Veterans in combat.

Human bags are absolutely not needed. They serve no function that couldn't be done by the regular player inventory. Plus, town portals are not gone. Just look at the gameplay video. The barbarian has a town portal scroll in his inventory!

As far as we know the video is way outdated (WWI08) .. there has been many announcements after that .. i'm sure there was an announcement regarding the checkpoints and such months after WWI (that's the time i remember hearing about the removal of town portals).|||Quote:

Okay, so if Rookies are equal in power to veterans, and the rookies have storage space, then they are clearly superior to the veterans. Even if you say they're better in different situations, the ability to hold stuff will still make Rookies better on average.

How exactly would the rookie bags work? Would each rookie have a certain amount of slots? Would the items spill out if the rookie died?

Like I said, just ignore the whole "human bag" thing and this idea would be great.

There was a town portal in the Blizzcon Demo. The wiki describes the "escort mission" where you bring a guard captain to his captured men. Once they meet up, they use a Town Portal to leave. I've read what you've read, but they just meant they want to lower the abuse of Town Portals, not completely remove them.|||Quote:

No, i didn't say they are equal in power to veterans ... that's not really what i meant ... rookies gain their usefulness from their customization ( being able to carry lots of items allows you to re-equip your rookies on the fly according to the situation and their current AI modules .. and these require some thought and planning to use .. unlike Veterans who are "equip and forget" (you can still customize them but with one veteran that can be hired at a time there are less options to play around .. i.e using rookies AI modules smartly to form formations and such) .. but being able to carry and use rares and set items opens up another way of customizing Veterans by providing more gear options for you merc.

So they are almost equal in what options they offer .. but each excels in a different field or situations.

Cheap rookies get none or 1 slot ... expensive ones get around 2 to 3 bags.

And yeah .. it's a bless if you can keep them alive .. but a curse if they die too often on the battlefield .. cause all their items get spilled on the floor XD

It's a double edged sword.

Actually they are human bags whether we like it or not, just by being equip-able with items ... we can then argue how much more items they should be able to carry ... but either ways .. large or small .. they are moving/fighting humanoid item bags. *lols .. this sounds so cruel XD*

Good point.|||I like the 3 vs 1 idea its would make the single player game go by a little better so you don't have that I'm all alone feeling to it. It would also make since they the youngsters would want more of them for "safety" and the vets just laugh at them and use a sword/ hammer ability and kill a monster|||Alright, you make some good points, Knight_Wolf. I didn't realize you only meant for like one or two slots. Then it's just a little bonus for rookies.|||I think that multiple mercenaries at once will have more sence if its confirmed that we're not going to get any class capable of summoing armies. But even in that case (and though I would love to play with groups, as I don't play online) they will probably inherit the same problem that mercenaries had in D2: if they have to be useful untill hell dificulty, they will probably be too powerfull at the beggining, making the game too easy at first.

I prefer what I've seen by now, parts of the game when you'll find warriors that will join you by certain period of time. It makes the game more dinamic, it allows you to play in groups for some time, but you won't depend on them on harder parts.|||i like the idea, but it would be cool if like u hire the rookie merc from the beginning and stick with him the whole game he would get stronger and better and becomes ur friend and carries stuff for u.
