Dueling: A duel is an engagement in combat between two individuals.
In the case of Diablo 3 it would be were two players agree on set rules before the duel. For example what armour you are allowed to wear in the duel (like shields off), if you are allowed to heal or not, if spells are allowed etc... There will also be the option to stake coins or items as the players wish. For example, one player will put up 500coins and the other player will put up 500coins. Or one player puts up 500coins the other player puts up a breastplate worth 500coins. The rules and stake will be agreed on by both players in an automated screen such as this.

Once they have agreed on the rules they will be shown another screen to conform the rules and then once both accept the final time the rules cannot be changed and the effects will take place.
They will fight 1on1 until one of them dies. The loser will take nothing the winner will take all. This is very fun to do and gives players the chance to create characters or builds best suited with staking.
To make this safe and fair an arena just for staking could be implemented into the game. In this area you can set the rules with the other player and then once you have both agreed you will be teleported into a coliseum style building/arena.
If diablo3 goes ahead with using gold as the main currency and needs ideas for a gold sink they could use staking in this way. Each player will have to pay a fee to stake/duel. Or you will need to pay a fee to enter the 'dueling arena'

hope to speak to you guys soon.|||Isn't "gambling", "betting" or "wagering" the normal word for what you're calling "staking"?|||I think it's a dumb idea because no one will want to duel unless they have all the very best of stuff.|||Being optional, I think it's an interesting idea.
